A scruffier, more laid-back version of the Netherlands with a splash of France. I used to spend a lot of time in Belgium, since I have friends living there, so I have a lot of opinions, most of them mixed. Belgium is famous for Brussels, but I don’t like the city; it’s a sort of Euro-LA (centerless, soulless), but much more expensive. There are a lot of other nice towns nearby, however (especially Leuven, where my buddy Brendan lives with his cats and family), where you can sample some of Belgium’s 300 or 400 varieties of beer. People drive there like they are discovering cars for the first time.
Belgium Plus: French fries with mayonnaise.
Belgium Minus: Brussels Zaventem Airport, even the new terminal; is this the Third World or what?
